FAQs

Materials

What woods do you use for the face of your cabinetry?

We work with real wood veneer, using a combination of premium domestic and select exotic species. Common choices include Walnut, Rift White Oak, Cherry, Figured Mozambique, Tamo, Black Limba, Fumed Figured Eucalyptus, Teak, Cypress, Bocote, Ziricote, East Indian Rosewood, and others. All materials are selected for stability, grain quality, and visual consistency.

What does grain-matched or sequenced wood mean?

Grain-matched cabinetry (also known as sequenced veneer) refers to aligning wood grain across adjacent doors, drawer fronts, and panels so the cabinetry reads as a continuous surface. This is a defining feature of high-end modern custom cabinets and requires careful veneer selection, layout, and precision fabrication.

Do you use solid wood or veneer?

We use both, intentionally. Solid Wood is used where structural integrity and longevity are critical. Veneer allows us to create large, uninterrupted surfaces with superior grain continuity and dimensional stability. This combination results in cabinetry that is both architecturally clean and exceptionally durable.

Are your materials sustainably sourced?

We prioritize responsibly sourced woods and efficient material use. The plywood used for our cabinet boxes is made in the USAFSC Certified, and uses no added formaldehyde, soy-based adhesive. We pride ourselves on using domestically produced hardware and materials whenever possible. Our shop is 100% powered by solar, with our roof fully covered in solar panels. We also believe that well-made cabinetry designed to last decades is inherently more sustainable than mass-produced alternatives.

Design & Services

What style of cabinetry do you specialize in?

Our work is rooted in Modern and Contemporary design. We focus on clean lines, balanced proportions, and natural materials, rather than decorative or traditional detailing. Common styles include Flat-Panel, Slab-Door, Minimalist, and Architectural Built-Ins.

Do you design the cabinets, or do I need a designer?

We provide full design services as part of every custom cabinetry project. Whether you have a concept or are starting from scratch, we assist with:

  • Space Planning

  • Material Selection

  • Door and Finish Design

  • Architectural Detailing

  • Lighting Design for the room as well as integrated lighting within cabinets and built-ins

  • Product Specifications for appliances, hardware, and fixtures

Some clients come to us with drawings from architects or interior designers, while others rely on us to fully design and refine the cabinetry. In all cases, we collaborate closely to ensure the final design integrates seamlessly with the architecture of the space.

What spaces do you build cabinetry for?

We design and build custom modern cabinetry and built-ins for:

  • Kitchens

  • Bathrooms and Vanities

  • Living Rooms and Media Cabinets

  • Home Offices

  • Entryways and Mudrooms

  • Libraries and Wall Systems

Each project is designed specifically for its architectural context.

Craftsmanship & Customization

What does “fully custom” mean at Straw & Co Woodwork?

Fully custom cabinetry means nothing is pre-set or pulled from a catalog. Every dimension, material, grain layout, construction detail, and finish is designed specifically for your project and built from scratch in our shop.

How do you ensure perfect grain matching across doors and panels?

We carefully select, sequence, and veneer each wood panel to achieve continuous grain flow across doors, drawer fronts, and panels. Every joint is precision-cut and hand-fitted so the final installation reads as a single, uninterrupted wood surface—a hallmark of luxury modern cabinetry.

How involved can I be in the design process?

As involved as you’d like. Some clients prefer to guide the overall vision, while others collaborate closely on every detail. We provide guidance throughout the process to ensure decisions support both aesthetic clarity and long-term durability.

Do you work with architects and interior designers?

Yes. We regularly collaborate with Architects, Interior Designers, and Builders, providing detailed shop drawings, material samples, and clear communication throughout fabrication.

Are your cabinets made locally?

Yes. All cabinetry is designed and built in the USA in our shop. We do not outsource fabrication or use imported cabinet boxes, allowing for strict quality control and precision craftsmanship.

Timeline & Investment

How long does a custom cabinetry project take?

Most projects take 8–16 weeks, depending on scope, material availability, and complexity. Grain-matched and veneer-intensive cabinetry may require additional lead time to ensure proper sequencing and finishing.

Are modern custom cabinets more expensive than standard cabinets?

Because we purchase all raw materials directly and build everything in-house, we eliminate several middlemen along the way. This allows us to offer exceptional value for high-end modern custom cabinets, especially compared to factory-produced or semi-custom options.

That said, high-end custom cabinetry is an investment. Modern, grain-matched cabinetry often requires tighter tolerances, higher-quality materials, more detailed planning, and greater craftsmanship than traditional cabinetry. Clients choose our work for its architectural precision, longevity, and visual impact, not for mass-market pricing.

The best way to understand cost is to inquire directly. Please contact us with as many specifics about your project as possible, and we can quickly provide a rough estimate along with pricing for design services. Once the design work is complete, you will know exactly what the project will cost.

Shipping & Location

Where are you located?

We are based in Florida and serve clients throughout the state.

Do you work outside of Florida?

Yes. We ship high-end custom cabinetry throughout the United States and the Caribbean. All cabinetry is professionally crated to protect grain-matched panels during transport.

Do you handle installation?

Installation is available for Florida projects. For out-of-state and Caribbean projects, we coordinate closely with local installers, contractors, or project managers to ensure proper execution.

Additional Questions

Can you match cabinetry to existing wood floors or furniture?

Yes. We can match wood species, grain character, and tone to complement existing architectural elements or furnishings.

Can you fabricate large-scale built-ins with continuous grain?

Yes. Our shop is equipped to fabricate large wall systems, libraries, and architectural built-ins with continuous grain flow across expansive surfaces.

What makes Straw & Co Woodwork cabinets different from other custom cabinets?

We are a small shop where each job has a name, not a number. The scale of our shop allows for an intimacy with each panel and component that a factory cannot achieve. We combine Modern Design, Grain-Matched Materials, Full Design Services, Lighting Integration, and Precision Craftsmanship to create architectural cabinetry that lasts decades. Every project is fully custom, thoughtfully engineered, and tailored to the client’s vision.
