Even when I am on vacation I am thinking about my work. It’s actually not as bad as it seems. When I am traveling I like to have a sense of purpose and my trip to Copenhagen had a lot of purpose. To hang out with friends, to bike all over the city and up the coast, and go to every furniture, kitchen and antique showroom in the city. The trip was an exhausting success. If you like urban bicycling I can’t recommend the city enough and if you like Danish modern and contemporary design, you’ve found your Mecca.
I went into some really high end kitchen design showroom to learn what the newest trends will be and to see how these high end companies are profiling and building their cabinets. I saw for the first time 1/2” thick counter tops. I always thought 1” was a nice standard since that’s what we mostly see here. Well, now I know a 1/2” counter top costs half that of a 1” counter and it can look very sleek. I also notice that shops were insetting glass top ranges flush with the counters. It’s a really cool look, it doesn’t make sense do do it any other way. I saw for the first time a gas range where the burners and knobs are mounted into the counter top. That kinda blew my mind honestly. I also saw that for all the hype our shop did better work, no kidding. There was no composition, or grain matching. They just stain the hell out of everything and call it good. But that’s how it is with factory anything, they are trying to crank that stuff out and make money, not art. I like to make money but I also like to practice craft and make art.
